SHIC started with a simple meeting in a school room in 2005 and is now an important part of Jacqueline’s work in India. Children who benefit from SHIC usually come from the nearby village and are helped with school fees, English tuition, a teacher to help with general tuition and homework in the evenings, medical expenses, clothing. Outings are also arranged for the older ones. Three young people from the village are now full time workers at the ashram all year round and Jacqueline hopes to create 2 more full time jobs in the near future.

Young ones from villages are at a disadvantage when starting school - town and city children often learn to read, write and recognise numbers at an early age. They tend to receive more support from the family, whereas village families must work very hard on the land and the adults do not have much education. SHIC now has a school in the village where small children come and learn simple skills to prepare them for school. Sometimes they visit the ashram and spend time with Jacqueline.
